Surfocracy - What's in our name?
The idea was simple, choose a name for our company that reflected our philosophy
of designing web sites which did not impose restrictions on how they should
be viewed. We wanted the name to convey the feeling that the "people should
decide".
Eventually we came up with a name which combined surfing the
internet with democracy - Surfocracy. It is pronounced the
same way as "democracy".
With apologies to the Oxford English Dictionary, perhaps the following explanation
would help.
Sur*foc"ra*cy, n. [Gr.,=rule of the people], where
the people share in directing the activities of the internet, as distinct from
activity controlled by a single class, select group, or autocrat. The definition
of surfocracy has been expanded, however, to describe a philosophy that insists
on the right and the capacity of a people to control their browsers for their
own purposes. Such a philosophy places a high value on the equality of individuals
and would free people as far as possible from restraints not self-imposed. It
insists that necessary restraints be imposed only by the consent of the majority
and that they conform to the principle of equality.
So whatever the state of your visitor's browser, whether they have Cookies,
JavaScript or Flash disabled, at Surfocracy we always design our sites to work
with the minimum of browser features present. This ensures that your web site
is open to the widest possible audience.
